Log Into the Catalog

When you sit down to do research, the first thing you should do is log into the online catalog, BobCat. From BobCat, you can search the library catalog, articles, database titles, journal titles, and course reserves.

Logging into BobCat is especially important if you are doing research from home because many of the library's databases and content are limited to New School members. When you are on campus the library is able to verify that you are New School member because you are physically in the library or connected through the New School wireless network. When you are at home, the library authenticates your New School member status by having you log in through BobCat.

If you plan on using RefWorks, it would also be good to log into it when you first sit down to research so that you can be sure that any saved citations are going to your account. To learn more about setting up a RefWorks account, logging into RefWorks, and using RefWorks, please click "Writing Resources" in the left navigation and then "Online Citation Tools."

If you get stumped at any point in your research, remember you can Ask Us.

Library Links on the Library Website

If you are on the New School campus, in a New School dorm, or logged in through the New School wireless network, you may prefer starting your research from the library's website. As noted above, if this is not the case, you will have to log into the catalog to fully access the library's content (databases and other electronic resources).
