Anthropology

This database covers dissertations and master’s theses in many subjects, including anthropology. Citations provide abstracts. The database is North American-centric, but has some dissertations and theses from other parts of the world. Most post-1997 and some earlier dissertations are available in full-text, many on a fee basis only. Those done at The New School are available free. Some theses and dissertations are available on interlibrary loan outside this database; practices vary across universities.

This database indexes journal articles, book chapters, reviews, and books in anthropology, economics, political science, and sociology. Searches can be done with disciplines (e.g., anthropology) as a subject heading and with limits to particular languages (e.g., English) and source types (e.g., books; scholarly journals). Its retrospective reach is one of its most valuable features, as it began at least 15 years earlier than the standard print anthropology indexes, although now Anthropology Plus is a strong rival in retrospective coverage because of its inclusion of much material from the Peabody (Tozzer Library) print catalogues.

JSTOR is an American not-for-profit database which provides full-text coverage of back runs of scholarly journals, including 94 in anthropology. It does not provide recent years since many other databases do that.

A British database which provides full-text coverage of back runs of 17 scholarly anthropology journals, ending at or in the year 2000. Eight of them are not also covered in JStor: Australian Journal of Anthropology, Canadian Ethnic Studies, Comparative Civilizations, Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Journal of Ethnic Studies, Mankind Quarterly, Pacific Studies, and Romani Studies.

This British database indexes a substantial number of anthropology journals until or into the year 2000 (unless they have ceased publication sooner). End paging is often omitted from the bibliographic record, which makes interlibrary loan, which requires complete paging, problematic. On the plus side: This database is notable for coverage of many foreign-language publications, less often indexed elsewhere.
